RAVYN

“I told you what he said,” I say to Bianca that night, after Nolan has fallen asleep. The kid is in heaven—first a day of fishing with his dad, then caribou chili and salmon dip, plus a trail ride on four-wheelers with his dad, uncles, and cousins—never mind that I about had a heart attack on that one. He’ll sleep through the night, no problem.

But it doesn’t change what Denver said to me on the trail.

After he gave me the best orgasm I’ve had in over six years. Giving them to myself has never been the same.

“You haven’t answered my question,” Bianca says. “Are you going to go to him tonight?”

“I can’t.” But dammit I want to.

“Because you can’t make any promises about kicking your dad to the curb?”

“It’s not just my dad. You know that.” If Dad cuts us off, he threatens everyone else in the family with the same should they stay in touch with me and Nolan. It’s sickening how powerful money can be.

“What’s better for Nolan?” Bianca asks in a heavy whisper, though I doubt anything short of a freight train would wake Nolan. Maybe not even that. “Growing up learning that money controls everything or breaking free of it?”

“He has cousins. They don’t have a choice.” But the truth in Bianca’s words resonates much deeper than I want to admit. He has cousins here, too. “I want Nolan to go to the college of his choice. Do whatever he wants.”

“Doing whatever he wants will always come with strings,” Bianca points out. She stares at me for an uncomfortably long time. “Go to him, Ravyn. You’ll regret it if you don’t.”

“Speaking from experience?”

Bianca shoos me toward the door. “Never you mind that. You have a second chance. Don’t take that for granted.”

The walk to Denver’s cabin is both too long and not long enough. My heart is thundering in my chest when I finally reach his door, but it has nothing to do with the physical trek to get here. I want Denver in the worst way. I want to promise him that we’ll be a family, but I can’t just yet.

“Hey,” he says, his eyes instantly filling with heat. “Come in.”

I swallow, nervous as hell for what I’m about to do. But I don’t stray from the plan I made on my long walk here. Following Denver back to the kitchen—I’m not surprised that he’s cooking this late—I shed my clothes.

When Denver turns around and finds me completely naked before him, I almost chicken out. I’m curvier than I was six years ago—thank you, Nolan. But mostly I’m nervous I’ve mis-stepped.

“Ravyn, we talked about this.”

“There’s never been anyone but you, Denver. Not in the six years since I last saw you. There will never be anyone else.”

His gaze rakes my body, the desire in his eyes searing my skin even from a distance. “No one?”

“Of course not. You’re it for me, Denver. It’s always been that way. I can’t promise you everything you want me to, but I can promise you this.
